Admissions
Preparation and College Admission Requirements
Students qualify for college admissions after completing a recognized secondary school program (high school) or its equivalent. They must have a good academic record. The ideal preparatory curriculum incorporates:
- 4 years of English
- 3 years of social sciences
- A wide menu of art courses
Students will also be evaluated for admission on the basis of the quality of their artwork. KCAI faculty or staff will review the student's portfolio and academic performance in relation to their potential for success.
The admissions committee looks for serious and motivated students. They seek those who are willing to work hard and take creative risks.
KCAI evaluates each application with a great deal of sensitivity and open-mindedness. The committee thoughtfully examines each application as they make their admissions decisions. They understand that college admission requirements in Kansas City are subjective. But they also know that each student's level of imagination, innovation and academic achievement is highly individual.

2. Compile your portfolio.
All applicants are required to have a portfolio reviewed by an admissions officer.
You may also submit CDs, DVDs or slides to KCAI for permanent portfolio reference.
3. Request 2 letters of recommendation.
The best examples would be from your teachers, a high school counselor, professional artist or employer. Make sure your references are familiar with your work and work ethic. It's very important that they be able to make accurate evaluations of your past performance and potential growth.

4. Request official transcripts.
Mail your official high school transcripts directly to the KCAI admissions office. Make sure the official school seal is on your documents. KCAI will not accept photocopies.
We accept GED scores as a substitute for a high school diploma. Mail your scores to our college admissions office.
5. Submit standardized test scores.
Test scores are required for admission for all first-year students. Test scores may also be required for some transfer students. Submit scores from either the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) or American College Testing (ACT) to the office of admissions.
A minimum combined score of 1425 is required for the SAT (or 950 without writing test). A composite score of 20 is required for the ACT.
6. Prepare a statement of purpose.
Compose a brief 1-2 page essay telling us about your goals, interests and artistic background.
7. Arrange for a personal interview.
Try to arrange a personal interview during a portfolio review. If this is not possible, the interview may take place on the phone, during an on-site school visit, or during a National Portfolio Day event.
8. Submit honorable dismissal forms.
After acceptance by KCAI, first-time students are to forward a copy of the honorable dismissal form to their high school counselor. The form should then go back to the KCAI office of admissions.
